  • Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to  26  in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the  27  ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too  28  for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of   29  .
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I sat down beside her. “Mom, I have a question to ask you. Is there  30  between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. She didn’t answer immediately. She  31 her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had  32  her. I was  33  and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread.Sometimes it  34  , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt   35  . If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen     36  , but it’s really there. Love is  37 .”
I listened carefully but I  38  her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly  39  seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked  40 . It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father   41  on the country road.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t  42  me.” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom.” 43  his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and  44 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just  45  in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

  • Two runners stand side by side at the starting line of a race. Both look every strong and fast. __41__ one runner speeds ahead and wins the race. The other falls behind.
Some sportsmen can reach great goals__42_ the achievement of an Olympic gold medal while others__43__live up to their promise. What kind of __44_ before a race or other event makes the __45__?
Everyone knows that sportsmen work out to strengthen(加强) their __46_. But research shows that strengthening the mind may be just as __47__. Careful study shows that the best sportsmen win __48__ because they think they can win.
Thinking positive(乐观的) thoughts seems to give possibility for __49__ in sports. People who say to themselves over and over, “I know I can do this,” often find they have the __50__ to win. On the other hand, people who think “I can’t win” often __51__.
One procedure(步骤)that helps many sportsmen is creating __52__ in the mind. They are told to think of each __53__ they must make to win. Some use pictures that are more fanciful. One skater liked to __54__ a star bursting inside her, __55__ her with energy. Another sportsman who wanted to feel __56__ pictured himself as a __57__ floating(漂浮) in the air.
Next time you want to do something well, try training your __58__ to help you. Perhaps a teacher or other instructor can help you plan your training. If you imagine yourself doing better, you may soon see __59__ in what you __60__ can do. Positive thinking and picture created in your mind can help you win!

  • I once had a friend who grew to be close to me. Once when we were sitting on the edge of a swimming pool, she  21  the palm (手掌) of her hand with some water and  22  it before me, saying, “You see the water  23  contained in my hand? It stands for love.”
This was how I saw it:  24  you keep your hand carefully open and allow it to  25  there, it will always be there. However, if you  26  to close your fingers round it and try to  27  it, it will spill through the first cracks(缝隙) it  28 .
Now I see this is the biggest  29  that people make when they meet  30  …they try to possess(拥有,占用) it, they demand, they  31  …and just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will  32 from you. For love is meant to be free, you cannot  33  its nature even in your lifetime. If there are people you love, allow them to be  34  beings.
Give, but don’t expect. Advise, but don’t  35  . Ask, but never demand.
It might sound  36  , but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to  37 . It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you must sincerely feel  38  expectations from those who you love.
If you love something, set it free; if it  39 , it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it  40  was.

  • One cold night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a  1 practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart. I was having   2 handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about  3 both acting and San Francisco. I had  4 too much of city life.
As I walked down the  5 streets under the tall buildings, I felt very small and cold, so I began  6 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my  7 , I heard a sound behind me. I   8  quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me  9 ,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I   10 what the noise had been. It had been my wallet  11 to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk   12 for 15 minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to quit the  13 , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an  14 look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up a wallet.
It was already 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some  15 of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

  • James shook his money box again. Nothing! He carefully  36  the coins that lay on the bed. $24.52 was all that he had. The bicycle he wanted was $90!  37  on earth was he going to get the  38  of the money? He knew that his friends all had bicycles. It was  39  to hang around with people when you were the only one without wheels. He thought about what he could do. There was no  40  to ask his parents, for he knew they had no money to  41 . There was only one way to get money, and that was to  42  it. He would have to find a job.  43  who would hire him and what could he do? He decided to ask Mr Clay for advice, who usually had _44 in most things. "Well, you can start right here," said Mr Clay. "My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing." That was the  45  of James’s odd-job (零工) business. For three months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by the  46  jobs that people found for him to do. He took dogs and babies for walks, cleared out cupboards, and mended books. He lost count of the  47  of cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the  48  increased and he knew that he would soon have  49  for the bicycle he was dying for. The day  50  came when James counted his money and found $94.32. He  51  no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle he wanted. He rode  52  home, looking forward to showing his new bicycle to his friends. It had been hard  53  for the money, but James knew that he valued his bicycle far more  54  he had bought it with his own money. He had  55  what he thought was impossible, and that was worth even more than the bicycle.

  • Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name is Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her   36 , but my mother once told me we used to   37   a lot. And I would   38  what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many   39  , but no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good”! That made my heart filled with   40 , but worried my mother. So one day when she met Mrs. White. She asked her why she never   41  my mistakes; why she never red-penciled in the wrong   42  of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
My mother said Mrs. White said “The children are just   43  to get excited about using words, about   44  sentences. I don’t want to dampen that   45  with red ink. Spelling and grammar can   46 . The wonder of words won’t …” And maybe she didn’t   47  it exactly like that because it was a long time ago and   48  my mother told me was just what she could remember.
Thanks to Mrs. White, I   49  up learning to use words with loving   50 . I had no qualms (顾虑)about writing what I meant   51  I couldn’t quite spell it out. A thought comes into my mind that if Mrs. White had used her red pen precisely, I   52  wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look   53  now and think she must have been a rather   54  teacher ——to exercise such red-pen-restraint (不纠错)——to   55  the joy, wonder and excitement of expression.

  • My friend Michelle is blind, but you’d never know it. She makes such good use of her other   36   , including her “sixth sense”, that she rarely gives the impression she’s   37 anything.
Michelle looks after her children pretty much like the rest of us,   38  that she doesn’t push too hard on them,   39  really benefit a lot from her relaxed attitude. She knows when to clean the house. She moves around so fast that often   40  don’t realize she’s blind.
I  41 this the first time after my six-year-old daughter, Kayla, went to play there. When Kayla came home, she was very   42 about her day. She told me they had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was   43 excited about her finger-painting project.
“Mom, guess what?” said Kayla, all smiles. "I learned how to   44 colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! And Michelle   45  with us.
To my great   46   , my child had learnt about color from a blind friend!
Then Kayla continued, “Michelle told me my  47 showed joy, pride and a sense of accomplishment. She really   48   what I was doing!” Kayla said she had never felt how good finger paints felt   49  Michelle showed her how to paint without looking at her paper.
I realized Kayla didn’t know that Michelle was blind. It had just never   50  in conversation.
When I told her, she was   51  for a moment. At first, she didn’t believe me. “But Mommy, Michelle knew exactly what was in my picture!” Kayla   52 . And I knew my child was   53  because Michelle had listened to Kayla describe her artwork. Michelle had also heard Kayla's   54  in her work,
We were silent for a minute. Then Kayla said slowly, “You know, Mommy, Michelle really did ‘see’ my picture. She just used my   55 .”
Indeed, she uses a special type of “vision” that all mothers have.
