  • If you’re into sports, you’ve seen it happen—tennis players jump over the net to shake hands after a hard match; football players exchange jerseys(运动衣)after ninety minutes of knocking each other around; even boxers touch gloves at the beginning of each round. Players in every event, from spelling bees to golf(高尔夫球),act in this way. It’s all part of sportsmanship(体育精神),a great tradition in sports and competition. It means playing and being calm all through the match.
Everyone feels great when they win. In the last few years, you might see some players celebrate a goal(进球)with a long victory dance or talk big about their ability. However, it’s always hard for people to say in public that they made a bad play. Good sportsmanship is what they really need. It’s the golden rule of sports.
Good sportsmanship means that you play by the rules, talk politely to everyone during games and stay cool even when you lose the game. At the school sports meeting, for example, it’s more important for you to know how to work as part of a team and cheer your teammates on. That may help you enjoy more success at your future work. In competition—as in life—you may not always win, but believe me, sportsmanship will help you get through, and there is always the next match.

  • People of Burlington are being disturbed by the sound of bells. Four students from Burlington College of Higher Education are in the bell tower of the church and have made up their minds to    15   the bells nonstop for two weeks as a protest(抗议) against heavy trucks which run    16   through the narrow High Street.“They not only make it    17   to sleep at night, but they are doing damage(损害) to our houses and shops of historical   18  ,”
said John Norris, one of the protesters.
19  we must have these noisy trucks on the roads,” said Jean Lacey, a biology student, “why don’t they build a new road that goes round the town? Burlington isn’t much more than a  20    village. Its streets were never meant for heavy traffic”.
Harry Fields also studying    21    said they wanted to make as much noise as possible to force the government officials to realize what everybody was having to stand. “Most of them don’t live here anyway,” he said, “they come in for meetings and the Town Hall is soundproof(隔音的), so they probably don’t    22   . It’s high time they realized the problem.” The fourth student, Liza Vernum, said she thought the public were mostly on their side, and even if they weren’t they soon would be.
I asked if they were    23    that the police might come to stop them.
“Not really,” she said, “actually we are suitable bellringers. I mean we are assistant bellringers for the church. There is no    24    against practising.”
I left the church with the sound of the bells ringing in my ears.

  • Street art is a very popular form of art. It is     quickly all over the world. You can find it on buildings and street signs from Beijing to Paris.
Art experts(专家) say that the movement began in New York in the 1960s. Young adults would use paint in specialcans to put their words and other images on walls and cars     the city. One well-known street artist is Swoon. She    paper images of people and puts them on walls. Swoon didn’t start her career as a street artist. She studied art, but       time went on, she got bored with the works she saw in museums or galleries(美术馆). The people in New York enjoy Swoon’s strong and interesting    .
Street artists do their work for a reason. Some of them choose street art because it is     to the people. Some artists try to express their opinions in their works. Advertising companies also use street art in their advertisements because it gives the deep impression(印象)and energy. The New York store Saks Fifth Avenue     used a street artist’s design for their shop windows and shopping bags.
In today’s world the Internet has a big     on street art. Artists can show their pictures to the audience all over the world on the Internet. Many people,    , say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it live. Street art lives with the energy and life of a big    . There it will continue to change and grow.
